Visual Arts Electives

DRAWING AND SCULPTURE    Code: DS

DRAWING

Do you like to doodle, scribble, draw all over books, then this exciting elective is for you!
We will draw using pen, inks, pastels, string, charcoal, coloured pencils even textas.
There is an artist who calls herself the texta queen she draws only with textas!

Drawing styles to be covered are realistic, abstract, imaginative, intuitive and expressive. Students will use a variety of media including pencil, inks, charcoal, collage and mixed media.
• Students will also study the beginnings of drawing from a wide range of cultures, past and present.
• They will investigate and trial drawing methods by artists and reflect on their effects.
• Students will analyse artworks from the masters and look at contemporary drawing practices. They will also go on a drawing excursion.

SCULPTURE

• Students will experiment with a range of different sculptural materials.
• Students will make their own sculpture.
• Students will also visit a sculptor’s studio and gain a valuable insight into contemporary practices
• They will analyse a three dimensional artwork and look at past and present examples of sculpture as an art form.

PAINTING AND PRINTMAKING   Code: PP

There are two aspects to this unit:

1. PAINTING

In this exciting elective you will learn how to prepare your canvas for painting, discover a variety of ways to apply paint, experiment with a range of techniques and effects using paint and be proud of your completed masterpiece. Students will also explore the way other artists have worked and discover some secrets of their techniques. Through discussion, analysis and research, you will broaden your perspective on what art is and find out about many exciting artists.

2. PRINTMAKING

Even though the printing press was introduced in the Renaissance, 1450’s printing continues to be exciting and viable art medium. In this elective you will experience relief printing, mono printing, etching and silk screening as you experiment in your studies.
You will finish printing on a variety of surfaces and even on a T-shirt.
How does Any Warhol do art? In this elective you will find out how, through research, discussion and analysis.
Printmaking has a wonderful connection to painting, drawing and design.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILM   Code: PF

The word photography comes from the Greek words “lights” and “paintbrush” together meaning “drawing with light”. Photography is the process of making pictures from the action of light; light patterns, light reflected, light emitted. You can capture moments frozen in time and preserve ideas and emotions for future generations.

We will post and share our photos on FLICKR and other photography websites.

You will have the opportunity to study traditional processing methods as well as aspects unique to digital photography. Through experimentation, you will learn about focal length, types of lenses, filters, shutter speed and aperture settings. We teach the chemicals and processes used during film development, dodging, burning and paper quality.

In digital photography, you will work in our wonderful Mac lab and learn about Photoshop, resolution and desktop printing.

Experimentation and innovation are encouraged of students undertaking this Photography elective. We also study past and present photographers through analysis, discussion and research.

Excursion to take photos is important in this elective.

VISUAL COMMUNICATION A   Code: VCA

‘ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN’
Do you tend to stop and admire the constructed environment around you? Are you amazed by historical and contemporary cutting edge Architecture & Design? Well this elective is for you! In this elective students will study a range of Architectural styles and learn and use ‘The Design Process’ used by all Designers. Students will design their own buildings & produce 3D images using a computer software program then further develop and construct these designs into 3D Architectural models with landscaping.
Analysis work will be studied.
This elective will include a related incursion/excursion.

VISUAL COMMUNICATION B   Code: VCB

‘PACKAGING & ADVERTISING’
We live in a world where visual images and communication dominates our environment. Do you want to be part of this exciting and creative world? Well, this elective is for you! In this elective students will learn and use ‘The Design Process’ used by all Designers to design packaging for a chosen product together with a company logo using Adobe Illustrator. Students will also design and produce an accompanying advertisement using digital photography and Adobe Photoshop.
Analysis work will be studied.
This elective will include a related incursion/excursion.
